Nature Girl Vanity

As promised, some images from my weekend installation at the Starline Gallery in Harvard for the A(rt) Train event. Since the space is relatively rough, we must rig up lighting for each exhibition and thanks to the help of my friend Greg, my little tableau was very well lit...for the naked eye, that is, not too easy for photography!

The statement I prepared to both post and to use as handouts is posted below. It was a lot of fun to watch folks explore and try on my wearable pieces...and many DID sit right down on the vanity stool and use the mirror, etc....just as I had hoped, so that part worked well. The old suitcase that I had found at the yard sale Easter weekend both looked and worked perfectly as a display prop--and now I see ways I can further adapt it in order to function even better (the vintage quality of this piece drew a lot of attention.) And yes, I sold a few pieces...and handed out several business cards.

"Blue Silk" is the title of the paper wall piece I chose to use this time. In making this paper, I incorporated some pulp made from a blue silk kimono that a student had brought to one of my classes--not a fiber that can actually be made into paper (it's not cellulose) but a nice fiber to use for inclusion. I hadn't actually installed this piece in a long time, so it was nice to see it again.
Over all, there was a LOT of art installed at the Starline, and the whole show looked just great. Turnout was OK, not as high as last Fall, but we had a busy 3 to 4 hours. The next event here at the Starline, that I hope to participate in, will be the Summer Solstice exhibition later in June.

It looks GREAT, Karen! I particularly love the display popping out of the suitcase. Hope you get some extra sales as a result.

Happy Spring :)

What a beautiful space! I love the addition of flowers (evident in so much of your work). I can visualize a tall, distressed trifold shutter behind it all - could be a good place to hang your work, as well.
